Pareto everything

The Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule, is a rule of thumb: 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. We think of it as a reminder that being pragmatic and focusing on quick wins and core ideas is the proper way to boost that 20% and make it as efficient as possible.

Instead of striving for perfection in every aspect of the business, we aim for excellence in the vital 20% and accept good enough in the remaining 80%.

Where it applies

  • Resource allocation: identify the 20% of efforts that yield 80% of results, and prioritize them.
  • Time management: prioritize the tasks that contribute most, rather than spreading time thinly.
  • Efficiency: streamline, automate, delegate the less critical work.
  • Decision-making: if a decision doesn't contribute significantly to the goal, it may not be worth pursuing.
